Understanding insurance approvals
For some medications, your doctor may need to get approval from your insurance provider before the prescription can be filled. This is also known as a “prior authorization.” Without prior approval, your insurance plan may not pay for your medication.
Here’s how it works.
Submission
Your doctor submits forms to your insurance company explaining why you need the medicine.
Review
Your insurance company reviews the request—usually within 2 weeks. Some medications can take up to 30 days.
Decision
A decision is made. If the request is denied, your doctor can appeal.
Prescription
Once your medication is approved, it goes to your pharmacy to be filled.
