Your screening plan
You have screening options
Cervical cancer screening can be done during an in-office exam with a health care professional, or self-collected with an at-home test kit.
Prepare ahead of time
Try not to schedule your exam during your period. 12-24 hours before your test, avoid vaginal products, douching, and vaginal sex. If you have questions, ask your care team how to prepare.
Get screened
During an in-office exam, your provider gently collects cells from the cervix using a small brush or spatula, and the sample is sent to a lab for testing. If you're using an at-home test kit, follow the collection instructions included with your kit.
Understand your results
If an HPV test is negative, screening is repeated in 5 years. If a Pap test is negative, screening is repeated every 3 years. If you have a positive HPV test or abnormal Pap test, your provider may request further testing or procedures.
