Schedule your screening
Cervical cancer screening is ideally done during an in-office exam with a health care professional.
Prepare ahead of time
Try not to schedule your exam during your period. 12-24 hours before your test, avoid vaginal products, douching, and vaginal sex. If you have questions, ask your care team how to prepare.
Get screened
During the exam, your provider gently collects cells from the cervix using a small brush or spatula. The sample is sent to a lab for testing.
Understand your results
If an HPV test is negative, screening is repeated in 5 years. If a Pap test is negative, screening is repeated every 3 years. If you have a positive HPV test or abnormal Pap test, you will need further testing or procedures.
