What screenings are there?

American Cancer Society recommends five types of routine screenings.

Breast screening

Women 40+ are recommended to get a mammogram. You can schedule your appointment directly, without needing a doctor referral.

Women 21-65 are recommended to get HPV tests. You can schedule your appointment directly, without needing a doctor referral.

Colorectal screening

Adults 45+ are recommended to get colorectal checks, like at-home stool tests or a colonoscopy. If a colonoscopy is needed, your doctor will give you a referral.

People ages 50–80 with a smoking history are recommended to get a low-dose CT scan. This check requires a doctor referral.

I have insurance

For most insurance plans, routine screenings are fully or mostly covered. Ask your health insurance about coverage for cancer screenings.

I don’t have insurance

If you need a cancer screening but don’t have health insurance, your local county or state health department may have programs available to help with costs.
